Coombs Hopkins Attends Opening of the New Regional Recycled Water Advanced Purification Center

October 2019

Earlier this month, Rick Eismin attended the unveiling of the new Regional Recycled Water Advanced Purification Center in Carson, California. This Metropolitan Water District of Southern California’s Advanced Purification Center will recycle 500,000 gallons of wastewater per day, with a future 150 million gallons per day.

Stantec, along with subconsultants Trussell Technologies and Carollo Engineers collaborated on the design of the facility, which features side-by-side SUEZ and Evoqua membrane bioreactors (MBR). This is an amazing opportunity for our clients to see how these two technologies compare.
In addition, the plant has also installed Trojan UV for the AOP process and Xylem mixers.
U.S. Rep. Grace Napolitano; Carson Mayor Albert Robles; State Water Resources Control Board Chairman E. Joaquin Esquivel; Los Angeles Regional Board Chairwoman Irma Muñoz; Metropolitan Board Chairwoman Gloria D. Gray; Metropolitan General Manager Jeffrey Kightlinger; and Sanitation Districts Chief Engineer and General Manager Robert C. Ferrante were the featured speakers at the event.

2018 American Water Works Association ACE Facility Tours

June 2018

The 2018 AWWA ACE Facility Tours included a walkthrough of the 300 MGD River Mountain Water Treatment Plant in Henderson, Nevada. Nearly 40 people attended the event, which was hosted by Rick Giltner of the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA). Leopold Filters with Type S underdrains and IMS Cap are at the heart of the process, which also includes Ozone disinfection.

It was one of the hottest days of the year so far, but fortunately XYLEM came up with a perfectly refreshing ending - an ice cream truck. Interestingly, chlorine gas was not a safety concern on this tour, but the group needed to be on the lookout for rattlesnakes!

Many thanks to SNWA for their support of AWWA.

OCWD and OCSD Set Recycled Water Record

March 2018

The Orange County Water District GWRS Plant set the bar for the most recycled water produced in one day by making 100.08 million gallons of high purity water.

Nearly 1,000 people attended the a Winterfest celebration, which included food, refreshments, and a snowfield and sledding hill. For several attendees, this was the first time they had ever seen snow, and the first time that they ever tasted recycled water.

Adam Festger of Trojan technologies was an official observer, and the record was certified by an official from the Guinness Book of World Records.

The record-setting day was made possible by the cooperative effort of both the Orange County Water District and the Orange County Sanitation District. The Sanitation District was able to produce just enough high-quality effluent to feed into the GWRF system for the Water District to purify to drinking water standards.

Valley Children’s Hospital first in California to implement EnviroMix compressed gas mixing systems for WWTP

March 2018

The EnviroMix Compressed Gas Mixing provides effective mixing at a fraction of the energy cost of diffused aeration or mechanical mixers and requires zero in-tank maintenance. The Valley Children’s Hospital in Fresno, California chose the EnviroMix system in lieu of a mechanical mixing or coarse bubble aeration system to reduce their maintenance and energy cost savings while providing improved mixed conditions. Facilities today are making decisions reflective of long-term cost of ownership as well as environmental stewardship. This EnviroMix system provides  20-year ownership costs that are significantly lower, and addresses not only the initial capital and installation costs, but also equipment replacement, maintenance, and energy consumption.
